inSPIREd Sunday

Sally and Beth host inSPIREd Sunday! Sundays in my City My Sunday Photo

March 2017 - San Miquel CA

We stopped here on our way to the Hearst Castle. It is a truly stunning piece of art.

I am going to break this post into a couple of parts as I have a lot of photos!

If we had approached from the opposite direction this would have been our first view.

Greetings!

Mission San Miguel Arcángel was established on July 25, 1797, by the Franciscan order, on a site chosen specifically due to the large number of Salinan Indians that inhabited the area, whom the Spanish priests wanted to evangelize.

The arches along the front were purposely built of various shapes and sizes, unlike the uniformity of other missions.

The mission remains in use as a parish church of the Diocese of Monterey. After being closed to the public for six years due to the 2003 San Simeon earthquake, the church reopened on September 29, 2009.

Click here to read a non-churchy story about the mission.

Before we even step into the mission we snapped some photos.

I'm going to post the photos from the church itself here.
